Healthier Apple Crisp

All year long I am patiently awaiting the arrival of the fall season. It is hands down my favorite time of year for countless reasons; the crisp, cool air, the leaves changing into an array of bright colors, finally being able to wear my cozy fall wardrobe, and all the food that is in season! Apple crisp has been one of my go-to fall desserts for as long as I can remember. It is one of the easiest and most delicious things to make when it comes to sweet treats.

Traditionally an apple crisp is laden with butter, flour and sugar, which could be argued that while delicious they might not be the healthiest ingredients for you. I have made a million remixes/renditions of an apple crisp and I have settled on this version as my #1 based off of how I feel after I eat it. It’s indulgent, comforting and crispy without being bogged down with not-so-great for you ingredients and it is one I can really feel good about eating.

I’ve made this version to be gluten-free, dairy-free and only sweetened with maple syrup and it is just as delicious as an other apple crisp recipe. I chose to cut my apples into slices with the skin on just because of personal preference, however, if you aren’t a fan of apple skins you can absolutely use peeled apples for this recipe! Hands down, my favorite component of this dessert is the crisp topping. It is so tasty, I was having a hard time not throwing bits of it in my mouth when I was topping the apples.

I really encourage you to give this recipe a try even though it may take a little more effort to make than grabbing one of those apple crisp topping boxes from the grocery store I know you won’t be disappointed. It is really easy to make and the only part that takes real work is having enough patience to wait for it to be fully cooked. Your whole house with smell amazing and your taste buds will thank you. I suggest topping it with some vanilla ice cream (dairy-free or not) to really step it up a notch. I seriously hope you enjoy it, I’m confident that you will.
