I am a prolific snacker. Anyone who knows me knows that I love a good snack. Snacking is one of those things that just brings me pure, unadulterated happiness and I know I am not alone. I don’t think I could fully trust a person that doesn’t appreciate a good snack every now and again.
I tend to crave snacks that are crunchy and salty. One of my ultimate, favorite snacks to indulge in is hands down plantain chips! They are just one of those foods that I have a very hard time saying no to. Recently I have opted to making my own plantain chips rather than buying them. They are so easy and ridiculously cheap! Two plantains only cost me 66 cents and the rest of these ingredients I believe most people already have at their houses.
I used my air fryer to make these, but I have also made them in my oven before, the cook times would just be slightly different. The air fryer cooks these so quickly and gets them super crispy. However, if you don’t have an air fryer, you can put them in an oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes.
These whole recipe takes at most 30 minutes to make and the chips are addictingly delicious!
Tip: To peel the plantain, cut both ends off, then run your knife lengthwise through the ridges of the plantain taking special care not to slice into the actual plantain within. Typically, there are 4 ridges. Finally remove the peel in strips and if needed use a paring knife to trim any bits of peel that won’t peel off.
Garlic Lime Plantain Chips

Ingredients:
2 Plantains
1 ½ Tsp Salt
1 Tsp Garlic Powder
1 Lime + 1 Tsp Lime Zest
¼ Tsp Pepper
Olive Oil Spray
Directions:
Start by peeling your plantains (see tip above). Then slice your plantains thinly with your knife getting them to the same thickness you would expect with a store-bought chip OR you can use a mandolin to ensure all chips are sliced evenly and thin to ensure that they crisp up nicely (about an 1/8th of an inch). *If you use a mandolin be extremely careful as the blade is VERY sharp and you can cut yourself easily. I recommend stopping when you have an inch chunk of plantain left.
Once the plantains are all sliced line them onto the air fryer basket. Then spray the chips with some olive oil spray. Pop the basket into the air fryer set at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until crispy. Repeat this process until all the chips are cooked.
While chips are cooking mix the salt, garlic powder, pepper and lime zest into a small bowl and set aside.
After the chips are done place them into a bowl, squirt half of the lime juice over them and sprinkle with as much as the seasoning mix, you’d like.
Enjoy!
